This bill amends the Safe Homes Act to promote the awareness of housing protections for victims of domestic or sexual violence. It requires landlords to provide a summary of these rights, prepared by the Illinois Department of Human Rights, as the first page of any residential lease. Landlords must obtain the tenant's signature acknowledging receipt of the summary. Failure to comply can result in the landlord being liable to the tenant for up to $2,000 in actual damages or $100, and the tenant can recover court costs and attorney's fees if they prevail in a private right of action. The bill aims to help more victims of domestic or sexual violence become aware of their housing rights and how to exercise them, leading to safer homes and greater financial security.
