This bill requires each county in California to develop a court reminder program that allows courts, defense agencies, pretrial services providers, or community-based organizations to send text message reminders to defendants about their scheduled court appearances. The bill requires arresting law enforcement agencies to request and transmit the defendant's cell phone number to the agency managing the court reminder program, and prohibits law enforcement and courts from using the contact information for any purpose other than court date reminders. The bill also provides for state reimbursement to local agencies for any costs mandated by the state.
