This bill, known as the Defending Democracy from Deepfake Deception Act of 2024, would require large online platforms (defined as those with at least 1 million California users in the preceding 12 months) to block the posting of materially deceptive content related to elections in California during specified periods before and after an election. The bill would also require large online platforms to label certain additional content as inauthentic, fake, or false during these periods. The bill provides a process for California residents to report non-compliant content and authorizes certain entities to seek injunctive relief against platforms that fail to comply. The bill includes exemptions for broadcasting stations, regularly published online media, and content that is satire or parody.
