This bill expands the fourth-degree assault crime to include physically assaulting and inflicting demonstrable bodily harm on nurses, physicians, and other persons providing health care services. The bill amends the existing law by adding new provisions that specifically address assaults against these healthcare workers, in addition to the existing provisions related to assaults against firefighters and emergency medical personnel. The bill sets the penalty for these new assault crimes at up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of up to $4,000. The provisions in this bill will take effect on August 1, 2024, and apply to crimes committed on or after that date.
