This bill amends the penal law to deem assault on certain employees assigned to an airport, while in the performance of their assigned duties or in direct relation to such duties, as assault in the second degree. It expands the definition of assault in the second degree to include assaults on airport employees such as terminal cleaners, cabin cleaners, facilities cleaners, wheelchair assistants, baggage handlers, skycaps, ticket agents, customer service employees, security guards, queue management employees, shuttle bus drivers, and any employee whose duties require them to work on the tarmac, while they are performing their assigned duties or duties directly related to services at an airport in New York State. 2. The bill aims to provide enhanced legal protections for these airport workers and deter assaults against them while they are carrying out their responsibilities. The bill will take effect 90 days after it becomes law.
