This bill would expand the existing Parent's Accountability and Child Protection Act to require a person or business that conducts business in California and seeks to sell or make available products or services that are illegal to make available to minors, such as certain firearms, tobacco products, and pornographic websites, to take reasonable steps to ensure the purchaser or user is of legal age. The bill would define what constitutes "reasonable steps," including requiring government-issued identification, and prohibit the retention or use of any information received for age verification. The bill would also allow the Attorney General to bring civil penalties of up to $7,500 per violation against businesses that fail to comply with these requirements.
