This bill establishes a two-year Sports Equipment Equity Pilot Program, administered by the Commissioner of Education, to provide grants to public schools, which are defined as school districts, charter schools, and renaissance school projects, to improve their athletic programs by supplying students with necessary sports equipment and resources for participation. Public schools interested in receiving a grant must apply by providing information about their need for the program, the current state of their athletic equipment, and any other details requested by the commissioner, who will select six public schools from different regions and types of areas (urban, suburban, rural) across the state to participate. At the end of the program, each participating public school will report on the number of students served and their experience with the program, and the commissioner will then submit a comprehensive report to the Governor and the Legislature, including recommendations on whether the program should continue and be expanded.
