This bill, the Timber Harvesting Restoration Act of 2024, requires certain forest supervisors in the National Forest System to submit a "harvesting improvement report" to the Chief of the Forest Service. The report must identify areas within the forest unit that could be used to increase the volume of timber sold, and outline actionable steps to achieve this. The bill defines key terms like "allowable sale quantity" (the maximum volume of timber that can be sold over a 10-year period) and "covered NFS unit" (a forest unit where the actual timber sold is less than two-thirds of the allowable sale quantity). The bill also requires the forest supervisors to demonstrate they have taken steps to increase timber sales within a year, and allows the Secretary of Agriculture to provide additional resources and support to units that fail to meet timber sale targets. The Secretary can also waive the reporting requirement in certain circumstances, such as after a natural disaster.
