This bill requires both firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) in New Jersey to receive specialized training about electric vehicle (EV) fires within 36 months of the act's effective date. For firefighters, the Director of the Division of Fire Safety, in consultation with the New Jersey Fire and Emergency Medical Services Institute, must develop a training course that covers the unique risks and safe management techniques for EV fires. Similarly, the Commissioner of Health, working with several state agencies and councils, must create a training course for EMTs that prepares them to safely respond to and perform duties at the scene of an EV fire. Both training courses are mandatory for all current and future professional and volunteer fire suppression personnel and basic life support EMTs. The bill mandates that the respective state agencies adopt rules and regulations to implement these training requirements, and will take effect six months after enactment, with administrative preparations allowed to begin immediately. The goal is to enhance first responders' preparedness and safety when dealing with the potentially complex and dangerous scenarios presented by electric vehicle fires.
