This bill, the Chief Herbert D. Proffitt Act of 2024, amends the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to include certain retired law enforcement officers in the public safety officers' death benefits program. Specifically, the bill allows retired law enforcement officers who died or became permanently and totally disabled as a direct result of a targeted attack due to their service as law enforcement officers to be eligible for the death benefits program. The bill defines a "retired law enforcement officer" as an individual who separated from service in good standing as a law enforcement officer at a public agency, with or without compensation. The amendments made by this bill are retroactively applicable to actions taken by eligible retired law enforcement officers on or after January 1, 2019.
