This bill requires the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the Department of Health (DOH) to jointly conduct a study on the causes, prevention, and reduction of disordered eating, which refers to a range of irregular eating behaviors that may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder. The study will identify treatment gaps, evaluate prevention strategies, and make recommendations, with a particular focus on how disordered eating disproportionately affects and increases mortality rates for people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, youth, and older residents. Additionally, the bill establishes a three-year Disordered Eating Prevention Research Grant Pilot Program, administered by the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services within DHS, to provide financial assistance to eligible applicants who conduct research on disordered eating and its treatment barriers. Both the DHS and DOH will report on the study's findings and the grant program's activities to the Governor and the Legislature.
