Bill Summary

Relative to non-opioid alternatives in pain treatment

AI Summary

This bill amends Chapter 94C of the General Laws to require practitioners who prescribe Schedule II opioids to consult with patients (or their designees, representatives, or guardians) about the risks of opioids, available non-opioid alternatives for pain treatment, and the advantages and disadvantages of using non-opioid alternatives. The bill also requires the Department of Public Health to develop and publish educational information on non-opioid alternatives for acute and chronic pain management. These requirements do not apply to patients receiving care in certain settings, such as hospitals, hospice, or long-term care facilities, or those being treated for substance use disorder or opioid dependence.
