Bill Summary

This bill allows the use of a placard issued to an honorably discharged veteran to permit a veteran to be exempt from paying a parking meter fee when driving or traveling as a passenger in a motor vehicle regardless of the vehicle's ownership. The exemption does not apply to instances when the motor vehicle is parked for more than 24 hours at one location where the motor vehicle is subject to a fee. Current law permits disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients to be exempt from paying parking meter fees when the disabled veteran's or Purple Heart recipient's vehicle is parked in a single location for a period of no more than 24 hours and the vehicle displays a disabled veteran or Purple Heart recipient license plate or placard issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.

AI Summary

This bill allows honorably discharged veterans to be exempt from paying municipal parking meter fees when their vehicle displays a placard issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, regardless of the vehicle's ownership. The exemption applies when the veteran is either the driver or a passenger in the vehicle, but does not apply if the vehicle is parked for more than 24 hours at one location where a municipal parking meter fee is required. This expands the current law, which only permits disabled veterans and Purple Heart recipients to be exempt from parking meter fees under certain conditions.
