This bill amends Section 88 of Chapter 221 of the General Laws, which concerns the furnishing of transcripts of court proceedings. The key provisions are: 1. Transcribers must provide a transcript of their notes or audio recordings upon request by the presiding justice or any party, and shall be paid at a rate of $4.50 per page for the original and $1.50 per page for each copy ordered. If requested, the transcriber must also provide an electronic reproduction at a cost not exceeding $7.50. 2. For "rush" copies, the rate is increased to $6.75 per page for the original and $2.25 per page for each copy, with the same $7.50 limit for electronic reproductions. 3. Copies requested by an indigent person or their counsel shall be provided at a reduced rate of $0.15 per page. 4. If the transcript is ordered by the presiding justice or, in a criminal case, the district attorney, the administrative office of the trial court shall pay the transcription costs upon approval by the presiding justice and, in criminal cases, the district attorney.
