This bill authorizes the Attorney General or Governor of Alabama to appoint an interim police chief to oversee a municipal police department if they determine there is a threat to public safety due to significant staffing shortages. The interim police chief would serve under the appointing authority's direction and not the city's leadership. The interim police chief would remain in place until the threat is determined to have been resolved. The municipality must continue to fund and maintain the police department at levels comparable to the previous five years, or risk losing state funding.
