Specifically, the bill mandates that these entities respond promptly and help resolve, to the greatest extent possible, any concerns about student safety on streets, roads, sidewalks, and crosswalks during students' trips to and from school. To facilitate this process, school boards are permitted to establish formal agreements (memorandums of understanding) with local governments or VDOT that either create a specific protocol for handling such complaints or designate an ombudsman (a designated official) to help resolve these safety issues. The goal of this legislation is to ensure that student transportation safety concerns are taken seriously and addressed expeditiously, providing a clear mechanism for students and parents to raise and resolve potential safety problems in school transportation zones.
