This bill provides a death benefit to the survivors of volunteer firefighters who die of cancer in Alabama. It defines "cancer" to include various types of cancer and "volunteer firefighter" as someone certified through the Alabama Firefighters' Personnel Standards and Education Commission or an equivalent certification. The bill establishes that a volunteer firefighter's death from cancer may be compensable as a line-of-duty death if certain conditions are met, such as passing a pre-certification physical exam without evidence of cancer and having at least 6 years of service before a cancer diagnosis. The bill also creates a presumption that the cancer is work-related if it is linked to a known carcinogen the firefighter was exposed to while on duty, unless the state can prove otherwise. The bill will take effect on October 1, 2025.
