Bill Summary
A BILL To restore funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
AI Summary
This bill, the UNRWA Funding Emergency Restoration Act of 2024, proposes to restore funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The bill recognizes the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the essential role UNRWA plays in providing shelter, education, healthcare, and financial assistance to millions of Palestinian refugees across the region. It calls on the US government to join its allies in restoring funding to UNRWA, given the agency's commitment to accountability and reform following recent allegations. The bill also requires the Secretary of State to report on UNRWA's implementation of recommendations from an independent review, and supports appropriating critical funds to UNRWA for fiscal year 2025.
