This bill amends the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to establish a program to advance the research, development, demonstration, and commercial application of small modular reactors (SMRs) and micro-reactors. It defines SMRs as advanced nuclear reactors with a rated capacity of 700 electrical megawatts or less per unit, and micro-reactors as advanced nuclear reactors with a capacity of 50 electrical megawatts or less. The bill requires the Secretary of Energy to support demonstration projects of various SMR and micro-reactor technologies, accelerate their certification and licensing, and reduce economic, technical, and regulatory barriers to deployment. The bill also directs the Secretary to identify priority sites for SMRs and micro-reactors at locations with existing energy infrastructure to leverage cost-effectiveness and expedite completion.
