Bill Summary

AN ACT ENTITLED: “AN ACT REQUIRING THE DISPLAY OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL BUILDING AND CLASSROOM; PROVIDING SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE TEXT AND THE DISPLAY OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS; AUTHORIZING A DISTRICT TO SPITS OWN FUNDS OR DONATED FUNDS TO PROVIDE THE DISPLAYS OR TO ACCEPT DONATED DISPLAYS; EXCLUDING THE DISPLAY OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS FROM THE PROHIBITION AGAINST DISTRIBUTION OF SECTARIAN OR DENOMINATIONAL PUBLICATIONS IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL; AMING SECTION 20-7-112, MCA; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.”

AI Summary

This bill requires all public school districts in Montana to display the Ten Commandments in every school building and classroom, specifying that the display must be on a poster or framed document at least 11 by 14 inches in size, with the text printed in a large, easily readable font. The bill mandates the exact text of the Ten Commandments to be displayed, which includes the religious commandments as traditionally written. School districts are authorized to use their own funds or accept donated funds and displays to implement this requirement. The bill also amends existing law to explicitly exempt the Ten Commandments display from prohibitions on sectarian publications in schools, clarifying that the display is permitted alongside other religious materials with cultural or historical significance. This legislation effectively requires public schools to prominently feature a religious text in every classroom, potentially raising constitutional questions about the separation of church and state. The bill is set to become effective on July 1, 2025, and is intended to be integrated into the existing educational regulations in Montana's legal code.
