Bill Summary
AN ACT ALLOWING LEGISLATORS, JURORS, WITNESSES, COUNTY AGENTS, AND ALL OTHER PERSONS USING THEIR OWN MOTOR VEHICLES IN THE PERFORMANCE OF OFFICIAL DUTIESTO COLLECT MILEAGE AT A RATE EQUAL TO THE MILEAGE ALLOTMENT ALLOWED BY THE UNITED STATES INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE FOR THE CURRENT YEAR; AMING SECTION 2-18-503, MCA; AND PROVIDING AN IMMEDIATE EFFECTIVE DATE.”
AI Summary
This bill modifies the existing state law regarding mileage reimbursement rates for legislators, jurors, witnesses, county agents, and other individuals who use their personal vehicles for official duties. The legislation standardizes the mileage reimbursement rate to be equal to the current year's mileage allotment rate set by the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS), removing previous provisions that reduced the reimbursement rate after 1,000 miles traveled in a calendar month. Previously, some state officers and employees were only reimbursed at 48.15% of the IRS rate or had a reduced rate for miles beyond 1,000. The bill essentially ensures that these specified individuals will now be reimbursed at the full IRS mileage rate for all miles traveled while performing official duties, without the previous mile-based reduction. The bill takes effect immediately upon passage and approval, meaning it will be implemented as soon as it is signed into law.
