This bill revises Montana's laws regarding the inspection and marking of hides and meat from slaughtered animals. Specifically, the bill eliminates the previous requirement that each dressed carcass must be stamped with an ink stamp, simplifies bill of sale documentation, and modifies inspection procedures. Under the new law, slaughtering establishments must still maintain a complete hide with tail and ears attached for each slaughtered animal until inspected by a state or deputy state stock inspector. The inspector will continue to mark the hide as prescribed by the department and keep a detailed record of the inspection, including information such as the establishment's name and address, inspection serial number, hide brand (if applicable), inspection date, and location. The bill also adjusts requirements for bill of sale documentation, specifying that when ownership of a hide is claimed through a bill of sale, the inspecting officer must obtain and attach the original bill of sale to the inspection certificate. Notably, the law maintains an exemption for individuals who kill livestock in good faith for their own personal use, who are not required to have the meat inspected or stamped. The bill becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval.
