This bill aims to enhance education about human trafficking prevention in Montana's public schools by making two key modifications to existing state law. First, the bill amends the legislative goals for public elementary and secondary schools to explicitly include supporting instruction on the avoidance and prevention of child sex trafficking and human trafficking. Second, it changes the role of the Office of Public Instruction from being "encouraged to" to being required to undertake activities to educate Montanans about human trafficking prevention. These activities include reviewing best practices, providing educational resources to parents, teachers, and community members, coordinating with law enforcement and social services, and supporting school districts in developing policies and educational materials focused on trafficking awareness, prevention, response, and reporting. By mandating these educational efforts, the bill seeks to increase awareness and provide tools to help prevent children from becoming victims of sex and human trafficking. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, giving schools and the Office of Public Instruction time to prepare and implement these new requirements.
