Bill Summary

AN ACT ENTITLED: “AN ACT REVISING LAWS RELATED TO HUNTING OF MOUNTAIN LIONS AND MOUNTAIN SHEEP; REVISING RESTRICTIONS ON SPECIAL LICENSES; ALLOWING MORE THAN ONE MOUNTAIN LION LICENSE TO BE ISSUED TO THE SAME HUNTER IN A LICENSE YEAR; ELIMINATING REPORTING REQUIREMENTS THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF FISH, WILDLIFE, AND PARKS REPORT ON HARVESTS AND TISSUE SAMPLING EFFORTS FROM THE TOY MOUNTAIN SHEEP HERD; AND AMING SECTION 87-2-702, MCA.”

AI Summary

This bill modifies Montana's hunting license regulations, specifically addressing mountain lion and mountain sheep licenses. The key changes include allowing a hunter to obtain more than one mountain lion license in a single license year, which was previously prohibited. Additionally, the bill eliminates the requirement for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks to submit biennial reports about the Tendoy Mountain sheep herd, including harvests and tissue sampling efforts. The bill maintains existing restrictions on special licenses for other big game animals, such as moose, mountain goat, and mountain sheep, where hunters are generally ineligible to receive another license for the same species for 7 years after taking a legal animal. The changes appear to simplify reporting requirements and provide more flexibility for mountain lion hunters by removing the limitation on the number of licenses a hunter can obtain in a single year.
