AI Summary

This bill, titled the "Sheriffs' First Initiative for Cooperation and Communication," requires federal employees or agents who are not designated as Montana peace officers to notify the county sheriff before conducting arrests, searches, or seizures within the state. The bill aims to improve cooperation and communication between federal and local law enforcement, enhance officer safety, and protect citizens' rights. Specifically, federal agents must inform the local sheriff about their intended action, with two key exceptions: if the subject is a county sheriff's office employee or an elected county/state officer, or if the agent believes notifying the sheriff might compromise the operation. In cases where these exceptions apply, the federal agent must instead notify the state Attorney General. The bill emphasizes ensuring local law enforcement has an opportunity to provide expertise and prevent potential misunderstandings or conflicts during federal law enforcement actions. The legislation will become effective immediately upon passage and will be integrated into Title 44 of Montana state law, providing a framework for interagency communication and collaboration.
