Bill Summary
AN ACT relating to excused absences from public school for students with a menstrual disorder.
AI Summary
This bill amends the Texas Education Code to allow students to be excused from school for up to 10 days per school year due to symptoms related to menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea, endometriosis, menorrhagia, or polycystic ovary syndrome. To be eligible for these excused absences, the student or their parent/guardian must provide documentation from a licensed physician confirming the menstrual disorder. Students with these excused absences will not be penalized, will be counted as present for attendance purposes, and will be given a reasonable opportunity to make up missed schoolwork. If the student successfully completes the missed assignments, the absence will be counted as a day of compulsory attendance. The bill will take effect for the 2025-2026 school year, becoming effective immediately if it receives a two-thirds vote in the Texas Legislature, or on September 1, 2025, if it does not receive the necessary immediate voting support.
