Bill Summary

This bill allows a "covered person" who has had an application for redaction or nondisclosure of a home address approved pursuant to Daniel's Law to have a post office box, an address other than the person's address, or other contact point listed on the person's driver's license or identification card issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (commission). Under the bill, a "covered person" includes an active, formerly active, or retired judicial officer, law enforcement officer, or child protective investigator in the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, or prosecutor, and any immediate family member residing in the same household as the judicial officer, law enforcement officer, child protective investigator in the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, or prosecutor. Under current law, driver's licenses issued by the commission are required to contain the street address of the place of residence of the person at the time of application or renewal. A post office box, an address other than the applicant's address, or other contact point is permitted in lieu of a physical street address in the case of a person who is a victim of certain crimes or who the Chief Administrator of the commission otherwise determines to have good cause. The bill also clarifies that an identification card issued by the commission is required to contain the street address of the place of residence of the person at the time of application and renewal, except that a post office box, an address other than the applicant's address, or other contact point may be used in the case of a person who is a victim of certain crimes, a covered person who has had an application for redaction or nondisclosure of a home address approved pursuant to current law, or a person who the chief administrator otherwise determines to have good cause. It is the intent of the sponsor to facilitate a uniform application of the privacy protections currently afforded to "covered persons" under Daniel's Law across various state government agencies overseeing the covered person's sensitive and protected information.

AI Summary

This bill expands privacy protections for certain public safety professionals by allowing them to use a post office box, alternative address, or other contact point on their driver's license or identification card, consistent with Daniel's Law. Specifically, the bill enables "covered persons" - which includes active, retired, or formerly active judicial officers, law enforcement officers, child protective investigators, prosecutors, and their immediate family members living in the same household - to have an alternate address on their identification documents if they have previously been approved for address redaction or nondisclosure. Currently, driver's licenses and identification cards are required to display a person's residential street address, with limited exceptions for victims of specific crimes. The bill aims to provide uniform privacy protections across state agencies for these public safety professionals, recognizing the potential safety risks they may face due to the nature of their work. By allowing these individuals to use an alternative address, the legislation helps protect their personal information and reduce potential risks to their personal safety.
