This bill establishes two key provisions related to outdoor recreational education for Nevada schools. First, it requires school districts and charter schools to adopt policies mandating at least 20 minutes of daily outdoor recess for elementary school students (kindergarten through 5th grade), with specific guidelines including exemptions for students unable to participate due to illness or disability, prohibitions on denying recess for academic or behavioral reasons except in extreme circumstances, and provisions for alternative indoor activities during unsafe weather conditions. Second, the bill allows school districts and charter schools to grant academic elective course credit to junior high, middle, and high school students who complete approved outdoor recreational activities outside of school hours, such as identifying native plants and animals, building trails, restoring natural habitats, learning outdoor survival and sportsmanship skills, and bird watching. The bill specifies that schools are not required to provide or sponsor these activities, but can establish rules for credit application, including maximum credit limits and parental consent procedures. The provisions will become effective on July 1, 2025, allowing schools time to prepare and implement the new policies.
