AI Summary

This bill establishes a property tax rebate program for Montana residents for tax year 2024, offering a rebate of up to $400 for homeowners who paid property taxes on their principal residence. To qualify, taxpayers must have owned and lived in the dwelling for at least 7 months of the year, with some flexibility for those who changed residences during the tax year. The rebate applies to single-family homes, manufactured homes, and mobile homes on up to one acre of land. Claimants must submit their rebate application electronically or by mail between August 15 and October 1, 2025, providing personal information and property details. The bill includes strict penalties for false claims, including potential criminal prosecution and financial penalties up to 300% of the claimed rebate. Additionally, the bill specifies that the property tax rebate will not be subject to Montana income tax and sets up a process for the department to review and process claims, with provisions for potential extensions and appeals. The rebate program is temporary, with the legislation set to terminate on June 30, 2026, and is designed to provide financial relief to homeowners by offsetting a portion of their property tax burden for the 2024 tax year.
