Bill Summary

AN ACT ENTITLED: “AN ACT REVISING ELIGIBILITY FOR DISABILITY PARKING PERMIT LAWS; PROVIDING FOR A PREGNANT WOMAN TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A TEMPORARY DISABILITY PARKING PERMIT; PROVIDING THAT A $10 FEE BE COLLECTED FOR THE ISSUANCE OF THE TEMPORARY DISABILITY PARKING PERMIT AND THAT AMOUNTS COLLECTED BE DEPOSITED IN THE STATE GENERAL FUND; AMING SECTION 49-4-301, MCA; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.”

AI Summary

This bill modifies Montana's disability parking permit laws by adding pregnancy as a qualifying condition for obtaining a temporary disability parking permit. Under the new provisions, pregnant women can receive a temporary permit for up to one year if a licensed physician, certified midwife, or advanced practice registered nurse provides certification to the Department of Justice. The permit will come with a $10 fee, which will be deposited into the state general fund. This change expands the existing disability parking permit eligibility criteria, which previously focused on specific medical conditions that limit mobility, such as severe walking difficulties, use of assistive devices, respiratory issues, cardiovascular diseases, and other comparable mobility-impairing conditions. The bill ensures that pregnant women who may experience mobility challenges can now access accessible parking more easily. The new provisions will take effect on July 1, 2025, and align with the state's efforts to provide accommodations for individuals with temporary or permanent mobility limitations.
