This bill clarifies that a specific provision regarding exemptions for local publicly owned electric utilities from renewable energy procurement requirements due to significant large hydroelectric generation also applies to future compliance periods established by the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission (Energy Commission). Currently, these utilities are exempt from procuring certain amounts of renewable energy if they receive over 40% of their retail sales from large hydroelectric generation under contracts in place before January 1, 2018. This bill ensures that this exemption continues to apply even when the Energy Commission sets new, multi-year compliance periods beyond December 31, 2030, for these utilities to meet their renewable energy targets.
