This bill creates the STEM Career Awareness Activity Fund and establishes a statewide program to increase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career awareness for high school students in grades 9-12. Beginning in the 2026-27 school year, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will implement a program that introduces students to STEM careers through participation in state, national, and international competitions. By January 2026, the department will solicit proposals and select a program provider that can demonstrate effectiveness in improving STEM instruction, increasing students' likelihood of pursuing STEM studies in college, or entering the STEM workforce. The program must be led by fully certified STEM teachers and will be funded through a newly created dedicated fund, which can receive appropriations, gifts, and donations. The state treasurer will manage the fund, and any unspent money will not revert to the general revenue fund at the end of the biennium. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is authorized to develop rules and regulations for implementing the program, with the goal of expanding students' exposure to and opportunities in STEM fields.
