This bill amends the Revised School Code to create the "Commission to Update African-American History in K to 12 Instruction," a temporary commission that will review and provide recommendations on age-appropriate African-American history curriculum and instruction for all grade levels. The commission will include representatives from various universities, the NAACP, and museums focused on African-American history. Within 365 days of the commission's first meeting, it must provide recommendations to the State Board of Education, which will then update the recommended model core academic curriculum standards to incorporate the commission's recommendations. Beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, schools will be required to provide instruction on African-American history as recommended by the commission, and the state assessments will include related questions. The bill takes effect 90 days after it is enacted into law.
