This bill expands the types of health care providers who can submit a letter on behalf of a patient applying for a handicap placard in Wyoming. Currently, only physicians and advanced practice registered nurses could provide such documentation, but the new law will allow physician assistants, physical therapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, and optometrists to also certify a patient's disability that limits their ability to walk. The bill modifies existing state law to include these additional health care professionals in the process of issuing special removable windshield placards, which display the international symbol of access and must be hung from the rearview mirror or placed on the dashboard when parking in handicap-designated spaces. The placard certifies that the individual has a disability expected to last at least twelve months which impairs their mobility. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2025, providing more flexibility for individuals with disabilities to obtain handicap placards by allowing a broader range of health care providers to verify their condition.
