This bill requires South Carolina school districts to offer one elective unit of instruction in advanced manufacturing and one elective unit of instruction in harbor pilotage in middle and high schools, starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The advanced manufacturing course aims to provide students with skills to adapt to technological innovations in manufacturing, with the bill defining advanced manufacturing as activities involving information, automation, computation, software, sensing, and networking, and utilizing cutting-edge materials and emerging technologies from physical and biological sciences. The harbor pilotage course is designed to give students an understanding of harbor pilotage as a career and entry-level skills, including an overview of becoming a licensed harbor pilot. The curriculum for the harbor pilotage course will be collaboratively developed by the State Department of Education and the Commissioners for Pilotage for the Upper and Lower Coastal Areas, with districts having the option to provide the instruction virtually. The bill will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
