The department must consult with the original monument provider (if possible), provide a 45-day public comment period for proposed language, and limit additional markers to content that includes key historical facts, the name of the monument's sponsor, erection date, and sculptor. The bill also stipulates that such markers cannot be erected within twelve feet of the original monument to preserve its appearance, and any markers placed between December 31, 2026, and the bill's enactment must be removed. The bill amends existing law to give the Department of Archives and History formal authority to approve inscriptions on historical markers across state properties and political subdivisions, and will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
