Bill Summary

Amend The South Carolina Code Of Laws By Amending Section 40-15-220, Relating To Dental Specialties Recognized By The American Dental Association For Which Special Licensure By The Board Of Dentistry Is Required, So As To Include Dental Specialties Recognized By The American Board Of Dental Specialties Subject To These Licensure Requirements; By Amending Section 40-15-250, Relating To The Granting Of Dental Specialty Licenses Without Board Examination To Diplomates Of Certain National Certifying Boards, So As To Include The American Board Of Dental Specialties Among Such National Certifying Boards; And By Amending Section 40-15-260, Relating To The Issuance Of Dental Specialty Licenses To Applicants Who Comply With Educational Requirements Of The American Dental Association, So As To Provide Compliance With Educational Requirements Of The American Board Of Dental Specialties As An Alternative.

AI Summary

This bill amends South Carolina's dental licensing laws to expand recognition of dental specialties by including those recognized by the American Board of Dental Specialties (ABDS) alongside those already recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA). The changes mean that dentists seeking to specialize in a particular area of dentistry can now obtain a special license by meeting educational requirements from either the ADA or ABDS, and can be granted a specialty license without examination if they are a diplomate of a national certifying board recognized by either organization. Specifically, the bill modifies three sections of state law to: 1) require a special license for practicing in specialized dental areas recognized by both the ADA and ABDS, 2) allow diplomates from national certifying boards of both organizations to receive specialty licenses without additional examination, and 3) permit dentists to obtain specialty licenses by meeting educational requirements from either the ADA or ABDS. The goal appears to be providing dentists with more flexible pathways to establish themselves as specialists while maintaining professional standards. The bill will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
