AI Summary
This bill modifies several sections of South Carolina's motor vehicle laws to adjust penalties and decriminalize certain offenses. Specifically, the bill revises the penalties for speed limit violations, creating a graduated fine structure based on how much over the speed limit a driver is traveling, ranging from $15-$25 for less than 10 miles over to $75-$200 or up to 30 days imprisonment for speeds more than 25 miles over the limit. For window tinting violations, the bill maintains strict penalties, with professional window tinters facing fines of at least $1,000 or up to 30 days in jail for each violation, and consumers facing fines of at least $200 or up to 30 days in jail. The bill also amends the general motor vehicle offense statute to establish that for violations of motor vehicle laws where no specific penalty is provided, individuals can be fined up to $100 or imprisoned for up to 30 days. Additionally, the bill repeals Section 56-5-730, which previously classified certain motor vehicle offenses as misdemeanors, and will take effect upon the Governor's approval, effectively reducing the criminal penalties for some motor vehicle infractions while maintaining significant fines and potential short-term imprisonment for more serious violations.
