This bill amends the Texas Education Code to expand prekindergarten enrollment eligibility by adding a new category: children of classroom teachers at public primary or secondary schools in the state. Currently, children can qualify for free prekindergarten based on factors such as limited English proficiency, being educationally disadvantaged, homelessness, having a parent in the military, being in foster care, or having a parent who is a decorated first responder. The new provision would allow children of classroom teachers to enroll in prekindergarten regardless of other existing eligibility criteria. The bill will take effect for the 2025-2026 school year, and it becomes immediately effective if it receives a two-thirds vote in both houses of the Texas Legislature; otherwise, it will take effect on September 1, 2025. This change aims to provide additional educational support for children of teachers by making prekindergarten more accessible to their families.
