AI Summary

This bill amends South Carolina law to establish a process for law enforcement agencies to obtain location information from wireless service providers during emergency situations. Specifically, when a law enforcement agency is responding to a call for emergency services involving immediate death or serious bodily injury, wireless service providers can be required to provide location information about a telecommunications device within a reasonable time frame. The bill protects wireless service providers from civil or criminal legal action if they provide such information in good faith. The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is tasked with obtaining contact information from all wireless service providers doing business in South Carolina and disseminating this information to law enforcement agencies to facilitate location information requests. Wireless service providers are also given the option to establish their own voluntary protocols for disclosing location information. The bill would take effect upon approval by the Governor, providing a legal framework for expediting emergency location tracking while maintaining protections for service providers.
