This bill modifies Missouri's law on unlawful possession of a firearm by adding a new prohibition for individuals under 18 years old possessing a firearm on public property. The new provision creates an exception for young people who have completed a hunter education course required by the state conservation department. The bill maintains existing restrictions on firearm possession for individuals with felony convictions, fugitives from justice, those habitually intoxicated or drugged, or those adjudged mentally incompetent. The penalty for unlawful firearm possession remains a class C felony, but becomes a class B felony if the person has a prior conviction for unlawful possession or has been convicted of a dangerous felony. The bill also preserves an existing exemption for antique firearms, allowing their possession even for individuals who would otherwise be prohibited from owning firearms.
