This bill directs the Boards of Psychology and Medicine to create a diverse work group to study the potential for granting prescriptive authority (the ability to prescribe medication) to clinical psychologists in Virginia. The work group will include representatives from various professional boards and organizations, such as the Board of Psychology, Board of Medicine, Board of Pharmacy, clinical psychology faculty from accredited institutions, psychiatry departments, the Virginia Academy of Clinical Psychologists, and the Psychiatric Society of Virginia. The group's primary task is to examine the education, training, and qualifications of licensed clinical psychologists, with a specific focus on their current level of pharmacology training. By November 1, 2025, the work group is required to report its findings to the Chairs of the House Committee on Health and Human Services and the Senate Committee on Education and Health, providing insights into whether and under what conditions clinical psychologists might be granted the ability to prescribe medications, which is currently a privilege typically reserved for medical doctors and certain other healthcare professionals.
