This bill requires licensed healthcare professionals who work with maternal populations (such as those in fertility, prenatal, birth, and postpartum care) to complete two hours of continuing education focused on healthcare during pregnancy and the postpartum period. The training will specifically emphasize care for populations that, according to data, experience higher rates of maternal mortality, postpartum complications, and infant mortality. The Board of Medicine will collaborate with the Virginia Neonatal Perinatal Collaborative to develop evidence-based learning resources for these practitioners. Licensees must complete this training either within one year of obtaining their license or by July 1, 2026, and will need to submit an attestation form to the Board confirming they have completed the required training. The goal of this requirement is to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce disparities for women and infants, particularly in populations that have historically experienced worse medical outcomes.
