Bill Summary

This bill amends current law to provide indemnity to firearm retail dealers who participate in suicide prevention efforts offered by the State. Current law provides firearm retail dealers who sell firearms or operate a firing range in this State the opportunity to participate in training course for suicide prevention. Current law also requires firearm retail dealers distribute informational suicide prevention materials provided by the Attorney General. This bill provides that a person would not have a cause of action for loss or damages against a firearm retail dealer resulting from the dealer's participation in a course or distribution of informational materials, except for loss or damage caused by willful or wanton misconduct.

AI Summary

This bill amends existing New Jersey law to provide legal protection for firearm retail dealers who participate in suicide prevention efforts. The bill requires the Attorney General, in consultation with the Commissioner of Health, to establish a suicide prevention course curriculum and informational materials for firearm dealers and firing range operators. The training course will help dealers recognize signs of suicidal tendencies in customers, learn intervention strategies, and understand available community counseling resources. Dealers will be required to distribute informational materials at their purchase counters, which will advise customers on preventing firearm access for individuals in crisis. The key new provision is a legal safeguard that prevents individuals from filing lawsuits against dealers for actions taken in good faith during suicide prevention training or material distribution, except in cases of willful or wanton misconduct. This legislation aims to encourage firearm dealers to proactively engage in suicide prevention efforts by protecting them from potential legal liability while promoting awareness and intervention strategies.
