This bill updates South Carolina's existing law regarding student identification cards to expand requirements for displaying crisis resource contact information across more educational institutions. The legislation mandates that both public and private schools serving kindergarten through twelfth grade, as well as higher education institutions, must print the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988) phone number on student ID cards. Schools are also allowed and encouraged to include additional crisis resource contact information such as the Crisis Text Line, local suicide prevention hotlines, or the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline. For schools that do not issue physical student ID cards, they must now provide the same crisis resource information through alternative methods like school websites, computer home screens, school agendas, or during suicide prevention awareness activities. Schools must annually verify that the crisis resource contact information is current and reflects the most up-to-date information available on the South Carolina Department of Mental Health's website. The bill aims to improve student access to mental health and crisis support resources by ensuring such information is readily available and visible. The legislation will take effect upon approval by the Governor.
