This bill amends New York state vehicle and traffic law to extend the timeframe for motor vehicle inspections for new motor vehicles. Currently, most vehicles must be inspected annually for safety and every two years for emissions. Under the new provision, new motor vehicles (as defined in section 415 of the vehicle and traffic law) that are sold to individuals (rather than to dealers or distributors) will now have a five-year inspection window from the date of sale, instead of the previous annual inspection requirement. This means that when someone purchases a new vehicle in New York, they will not need to get their first safety and emissions inspection until five years after the purchase date. The change is designed to reduce the administrative burden on new vehicle owners and potentially save them time and money associated with more frequent vehicle inspections. The bill will take effect immediately upon passage.
