This bill modifies existing New York vehicle and traffic law to allow volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance/mobile crisis team members to affix one or more blue or green lights, respectively, to certain motor vehicles under specific conditions. Currently, the law only allows for a single blue or green light, but this amendment expands that to "one or more" lights. The lights can be on vehicles owned by the volunteer, their family members, or businesses they are associated with, but only with written authorization from the chief of their fire department, ambulance service, or mobile crisis team. These lights may only be displayed during actual emergency operations, and the authorization can be revoked at any time by the authorizing official. The bill maintains restrictions that limit the use of these colored lights specifically to volunteer emergency service members, with some exceptions.
