This bill modifies the Safe Schools Fund grant allocation process by allowing for more flexible redistribution of funds within the same fiscal year. Currently, the law requires that $10 million be appropriated annually to the Fund to provide grants to local school systems and law enforcement agencies. The bill introduces a key change that permits grants to be reallocated to local school systems that have completely used their initial allocation and can demonstrate additional need. Additionally, the bill mandates that the Subcabinet (a group of senior government officials) will notify local school systems twice annually about the status of these fund allocations. The grants will continue to be initially distributed proportionally based on the number of schools in each school system compared to the total number of public schools in Maryland. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2025, and aims to ensure that available school safety funding can be more dynamically used to address urgent needs across different school systems.
