This bill modifies the Community Health and Safety Works Grant Program by expanding the definition of eligible projects and streamlining the program's structure. The bill broadens the types of projects that can receive grants to include community or business district improvement projects, community-centered crime and violence intervention projects, and any other project recognized by the Secretary as a crime prevention strategy addressing environmental, health, or safety concerns. Eligible applicants now include tax-exempt nonprofit organizations, governmental units, and higher education institutions collaborating with neighborhood associations. The bill removes previous separate sections for different types of projects (facility improvements, business district security, and crime intervention) and consolidates them into a more flexible framework. The grant amounts are no longer strictly defined, with the Department given discretion to determine funding. The bill also allows the Community Health and Safety Works Grant Program Fund to be used not only for grants but also for administrative and operating expenses of the Department. These changes aim to provide more flexibility and broader support for community safety and improvement initiatives. The modifications will take effect on July 1, 2025.
