This bill requires the Maryland Medical Assistance Program, insurers, nonprofit health service plans, health maintenance organizations, and managed care organizations to provide coverage for calcium score testing beginning January 1, 2026, in accordance with the most recent guidelines issued by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) that expand preventive care services. Previously, the coverage was limited to individuals with specific risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of premature coronary artery disease. The bill removes these specific risk factor restrictions, instead directing healthcare providers to follow the ACC's most recent guidelines for preventive care. The coverage requirement will apply to all health insurance policies, contracts, and health benefit plans issued, delivered, or renewed in the state on or after January 1, 2026. Calcium score testing is a medical imaging technique that helps assess an individual's risk of heart disease by measuring the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries, which can be an early indicator of potential cardiovascular problems.
